Best Dating Apps (2026): Reasons Not to Join?

For over 25 years now, dating apps have been one of the most popular options singles have turned to for finding love. And if you’re here looking for the best dating apps (or at least the most popular), we’ve got that list for you down below.

But before we get there, it’s important that we discuss a monumental shift that’s happening. Quality singles are turning away from dating apps, and before you decide to head down the dating app trail, it’s important that you at least hear why.

Why People Are Turning Away from Dating Apps

The biggest reason that singles are turning away from dating apps is because more and more it feels like a numbers game. More and more the focus is put on quantity and seeing the most people in the shortest period of time instead of focusing on quality matches.

Recently, the CEO of Match Group, the largest owner of dating apps in the world, penned a letter to his employees sharing this very fact. CEO Spencer Rascoff said, “Too often, our apps have felt like a numbers game rather than a place to build real connections…”

And he wasn’t the only one saying something like this. Whitney Wolfe Herd, Founder and newly reinstated CEO of Bumble, said, “It can sometimes feel like finding love online has lost its way, and it’s our commitment to you to change that,” in an article to users titled “It’s not you, it’s us.”

The problem with dating apps isn’t just about the ‘numbers’, it may also be about the ‘game’ factor. Research is starting to show that dating apps may be using gamification to create addictive properties that manipulate user’s dopamine causing them to always chase a fleeting feeling of satisfaction. The result can be emotional fatigue, burnout, and even depression.

According to a recent study from the Healthy Framework Center for Digital Safety, nearly 1 in 3 adults say they sought professional help as a result of using online dating apps.

So, where are dating app users turning?

Many singles still recognize the need for help to find love, but want a better way. One of the most popular alternatives to even the best of dating apps is a professional matchmaking service.

Matchmaking services set you up with a one-on-one personal matchmaker who gets to know you, learns your unique wants and needs, and handles the work for you. They leverage their expertise to find you ideal matches and give you an incredible alternative option to find love — without all the drawbacks that come with dating apps.

Here are the 4 most popular dating apps of 2026.

In case you still feel like trying out a dating app, we did want to share the most popular options regarded as the best dating apps on the market.

Hinge

Hinge is a relatively popular dating app owned by Match Group (the company we referenced at the beginning of the article). The app was founded in 2012 by a Harvard grad student, but didn’t experience a real rise in popularity until 2013 when the company hosted a massive party in D.C

Hinge’s main differentiator is that it offers a lot of creative flexibility with how users create their profiles and how they interact. Some users report really liking the ability to be creative while some have found it to be distracting at times.

All Hinge accounts have some level of free capabilities, but an upgraded premium account is needed to experience all of the available features. Membership options include Hinge+ (the middle tier option) and HingeX (the option with all features). The major difference between Hinge+ and HingeX is that the higher tier option gives you enhanced recommendations (better matching) and the ability to be in front of other members with different features.

  • Biggest Pro: Creative profiles that offer unique ways to showcase yourself
  • Biggest Con: Some users find the number of different features overwhelming
  • Starting Price: $29.99 per month

Tinder

With some reports saying Tinder has over 75 million monthly active users (MAUs), it’s easily one of the largest and most popular dating apps on the market. Also owned by Match Group, the app works on a mutual match style system where all users swipe to show interest in other users who are close to them in proximity. If two users show interest in each other (a mutual match), a chat is opened up.

Like Hinge, Tinder does come with some free functionality, but operates on a freemium model. In other words, you get limited free functionality and will need to pay to upgrade your account to get access to other features.

  • Biggest Pro: Large user base over 75 million by some reports
  • Biggest Con: Many say the app is only good for casual dating
  • Starting Price: Freemium model with paid upgrades

Eharmony

As one of the oldest dating apps on the market (founded August 22, 2000), eharmony has seen a lot of success in helping people find serious relationships. The app is built around a pretty in-depth personality quiz that aims to match users based on their comparative answers.

There is some confusion about whether or not eharmony is a Christian dating app, mainly because the app was founded by Christian theologian Dr. Neil Clark Warren. According to the company’s FAQ, though, they are not a Christian dating app and accept members of all religions and backgrounds.

While eharmony isn’t known for leaning into the addictive-style technology for matchmaking, some users have noted that the time commitment to use eharmony is substantial. The matching quiz can take up to 45 minutes to complete just to gain access to the site. Additionally, the profiles on eharmony are quite robust and you’re required to fill out a certain percentage of your profile before you can even send a message. You’re probably looking at at least a few hours just to get your account set up, and that doesn’t count any time for searching matches and starting conversations.

Some arguments could be made that this is a good barrier to entry for anyone who isn’t serious about finding love, but if your time is important to you, it highlights the benefits of using a matchmaking service where you don’t have to do any of this work.

  • Biggest Pro: Over 25 years in the dating business
  • Biggest Con: Requires a significant time commitment
  • Starting Price: $35.90 per month

Bumble

Bumble has had a bit of a rollercoaster ride over the years, both as a company and as a dating app. Most recently, we’ve seen some dramatic changes to how the app works. When Bumble started, it was a swipe-style matchmaking service (which makes sense as its founder was also a cofounder at Tinder) but the difference with Bumble is that the woman always had to make the first move. When a mutual match was made, if the woman didn’t send the first message in a certain period of time, the match would expire.

Recently, though, Bumble abandoned this process, and now the app operates a lot more similarly to how Tinder does. It will be interesting to see how this affects the quality of the app, especially with Whitney Wolfe Herd returning to the CEO role after stepping down in January of 2024.

  • Biggest Pro: New changes could improve the process
  • Biggest Con: Some say the company is struggling for direction
  • Starting Price: $29.99 per month

Should I use one of the best dating apps or a matchmaking service?

Ultimately, the decision on whether or not these top dating apps are right for you — is up to you. On one hand, dating apps do attract large numbers of users and they have historically helped some people get results.

However, the big question is at what cost? If the allegations and the research about the effect they have on your mental health are accurate, you may be doing yourself a disservice. And when the leaders of the biggest dating apps start calling them a “numbers game” — that can be cause for concern.
